Puzzlewood is an ancient woodland site, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. The site, covering 14 acres, shows evidence of open cast iron ore mining dating from the Roman period, and possibly earlier. In 1848 some workmen, after moving a block of stone in the woods, found a small cavity in the rocks. In this cavity, hidden away, were three earthenware jars containing over 3,000 Roman coins. No-one knows why the coins were hidden away in the cliff face nor by whom.
J. R. R. Tolkien, a frequent visitor to the Forest of Dean, may have visited Puzzlewood, and many believe Puzzlewood was the inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle-earth, such as the Old Forest, Mirkwood, Fangorn or Lothlórien contained within The Lord of the Rings. J.K Rowling is also said to have visited Puzzlewood, and it may have been this that influenced her idea of The Forbidden Forest in the Harry Potter books.

haha, we currently have a bunch of plants on our ironing board in the pantry. We just put them there so they could sit by the window; I wasn’t aware that it was cool.

So I’m loving this Twin Cities Literacy Class
Monday: We read Carol Bly & talked about our personal experience with public/private libraries.
Tuesday: We walked across the Washington Avenue bridge while reading parts of John Berryman’s ‘77 Dream Songs’ aloud…twas a bit eerie, but cool too.
Wednesday: We visited the underground archive caverns beneath the west bank. I read a few issues of The Little Sandy Review, a 1960s folk-music magazine, and enjoyed their (often scathing) critique of rising star Bob Dylan: “His words and music now seem filtered through ‘the Dylan image’ before they reach their audience, and their effect is strangely flat once they finally arrive. Clearly, here is a man who has started to believe in his own publicity, and his art is suffering for it. He is now called a Poet, not just a folk singer.”
We also had the chance to rifle through some of Carol Bly’s old journals. In a June 1965 entry, she wrote:
“If you don’t stop talking about banning the bomb, boys are never going to like you.”
She didn’t indicate where this little gem of a statement came from, but I like to think that her mother said it to her, or something, and she immediately thought: “I should write that shit down, and put it in a novel someday.” I do that with stuff my mom says all the time. LOL.
Thursday: We loitered around the MPLS Central Library, drinking Dunn Bros, and talking about local Hmong writers. It rained all day, so the library was the place to be.
